As the elevation drawing shows, this is a pretty sophisticated hull: from the plan view, you wouldn't know it was a raft.
It's also fascinating that a raft-style boat would be reproduced in GRP. The design must fulfill its users' needs so well, and/or there is a strong cultural attachment to the design independent of its practicality. I would expect that most boatmen would prefer not to be wet and would more readily adopt a traditional displacement hull, if given the chance, but that's obviously not the case here.Bob Holtzmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05878339327766256094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466695305125791022.post-76149199144217955382017-06-20T22:44:17.665-07:002017-06-20T22:44:17.665-07:00Hi Robert,
If you do a google search of kattumaram...Hi Robert,
If you do a google search of kattumaram, you'll get a load of hits of these boat in use for fishing today from the west coast [kerala region] all the way around into the Bay of Benghal up to Sri Lanka.

some examples:

http://www.katamkera-voyages.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Catamaran-891x668.jpg

Tamil Nadu area:

http://i1.trekearth.com/photos/66967/07032501.jpg

Jaffna region:

http://amazinglanka.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/DSCF8343-1024x518.jpg

Sri Lanka region:

http://images.deccanchronicle.com/dc-Cover-42n4n1fs9f6hon1n7cjc1q2lj6-20161014080633.Medi.jpeg

I couldn't find a web photo, but there are some amazing photo of kattumarams outfitted with longtail engines surfing along and around the coastal waves.

One of the interesting related boats is the Wooden Teppa [sometimes teppan] that is an only slightly more refined kattumaram with 2 small added washstrakes. It would be interesting to know what and where and why the change or improvement.
photo

http://www.uwa-pro.de/projekte/bilder/14-s.jpg

linesplans:

http://www.uwa-pro.de/projekte/bilder/20-s.jpg

**
as I have mentioned before, I believe all the indigenous wooden craft in India are threatened because of high wood prices, loss of artisans, and possibly some job migration. One can see this in that even the lowly kattumaram is being replaced by GRP versions:

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TDEGMd_8aTs/maxresdefault.jpg

However, these GRP boats are slightly provocative as they are quite stable, could be reinvented as multichamber inflatables and possibly distributed here as quick and easy and safe and cheap sit-on-tops.

regards
mick allen

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
