Click on his name (alphabetized under "A" for Alan) in the Labels index if you'd like to see these posts. You'll see that my understanding of the term "dhow" and its typical sail type has advanced somewhat since my reading of Villiers.Bob Holtzmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05878339327766256094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466695305125791022.post-38012655898902697312009-07-06T06:18:04.216-07:002009-07-06T06:18:04.216-07:00Read Alan Villiers's great book, Sons of Sinba...Read Alan Villiers's great book, Sons of Sinbad, wherein he documents a year in the life of Yemeni Arab dhows/booms in the mid 1930s. I couldn't put this book down. Villiers was an experienced sailing-sailor concerned with documenting the world's last commercial sailing traditions. Though a white man of the 1930s, and not slow to voice his irritations, he attains a tone of ethnographic interest and respect towards the boats and the many Arab, Indian, and African sailors he met. -- Wade TarziaWade Tarziahttp://www.wtarzia.comnoreply@blogger.com
